Admissions

Admissions will be conducted on a rolling basis.

All prospective students enrolling in a program or electing to audit courses must submit an application form to the Registrar.

Requirements for Baccalaureate Degree

A candidate for the Maimonides B.A. degree must have satisfactorily completed 120 credit hours with at least 42 credits in residence and with a minimum cumulative average of 2.75 on the scale of A=4.0; A-=3.75;  B+=3.50; B=3; C=2; D=1.

In order to qualify for the B.A. degree, a student must offer the broad area of Religious Studies as his or her major field of concentration. This entails the satisfactory completion of 60 credits from among the departments of Biblical Studies; Hebrew Language and Literature; History; Philosophy; and Religion. A minimum of 30 credits must be from upper level 300 courses. The remaining 60 credits leave room for a minor concentration, or may be selected from among courses rounding out a humanities concentration.

Distribution of courses must receive approval from the office of the Dean of Academic Studies.

Transfer of credit from other institutions is subject to evaluation from the office of the Dean of Academic Studies.

Master of Jewish General Studies (MJGS)

The MJGS is designed for adult learners who:
• have an undergraduate degree, but who have little or no undergraduate education in academic Jewish Studies.
• wish to acquire a credential that may be useful in Jewish education or communal service.

Requirements

• 3 Foundations classes, 1 in each of 3 areas: Text, Concept and Context.
• 3 Intermediate classes, in at least 2 areas.
• 6 Elective classes, at Intermediate or Advanced level, in any areas.

Master of Arts in Jewish Studies (MAJS)

The MAJS is designed for adult learners who:
• have an undergraduate degree, but who have little or no undergraduate education in academic Jewish Studies.
• wish to concentrate in a particular area of Jewish Studies.
• wish to develop independent research skills.
• wish to acquire a credential that may be useful in Jewish education or communal service.
• may wish to go on to pursue a doctoral degree in Jewish Studies.

Requirements

• 3 Foundations classes, 1 in each of 3 areas: Text, Concept and Context.
• 3 Intermediate classes, in at least 2 areas.
• 2 Reading classes, 1 in Area of Concentration.
• 3 Advanced classes, in Area of Concentration.
• 1 Research Seminar in Area of Concentration.
